Mathematics Competitions
Coordinators: John Burns, Carmen Wehrestedt, Mathematics Educators
The Nipissing University Mathematics Department (in conjunction with other individuals, organizations and corporations) is hosting and sponsoring two Mathematics Contests for secondary school students within the region during the 2010-11 school year. The first will be held on Friday December 10th, 2010 (Room A246) from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM and will be for students in Grades 9 and 10. The second will be on Friday May 6th, 2011, from 9:30 AM until about 2:30 PM, and will be for students in Grades 11 and 12.
Participating students will be competing in teams and working out the solutions to challenging mathematics problems. The emphasis will be on seeking collaborative group solutions, rather than individual competition. Prizes will be awarded to the students on the top teams, but all participants will receive a T-shirt as well as all they can eat. Secondary school mathematics teachers have already begun the process of selecting and preparing their students for these exciting contests. Nipissing Mathematics Students from both the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Faculty of Education will be serving as markers at these two special events.
